What to Expect When Making an Auto Claim

It is an unfortunate truth that most drivers will one day experience an auto accident in some capacity.  More often than not, dealing with the insurance companies afterwards is confusing and complicated.  Not knowing what will happen when calling to make a claim can cause some people to be scared, anxious, or even aggressive.  But it doesn’t have to be that way.  Knowing what to expect when making a claim can make the process much smoother for everyone involved.

You should call your insurance company as soon as possible following an accident; there are often time limits in which you may make a claim.  You will likely be asked to provide a recorded statement either in person or over the phone.  This should not intimidate you.  Normally, the representative asks straightforward questions concerning the accident that you will be asked to respond to and you will be made aware of when and if any recording takes place.  You do have an obligation to cooperate with your insurance company’s investigation.

If other vehicles were involved in the collision, there’s a chance that you will be contacted by a representative from the other driver’s insurance company.  You may have heard that you should never talk to someone from another insurance company, but this advice is debatable.  For the most part, they are merely trying to do the same thing your own insurance company is trying to do—gather all necessary information about the accident.  Most of the time different people involved in the same event have slightly different versions of exactly what happened.  That being said, you typically are under no obligation to comply with their request for information.

Having an idea of what your insurance policy covers before you’re in an accident can help alleviate some of the anxiety that typically follows an accident.  Typically, most auto insurance covers some combination of medical bills, property damage, and bodily injury.  Insurance companies often have to step in and help pay when an uninsured or underinsured motorist is involved.  Collision insurance (when your vehicle comes in contact with a stationary object), comprehensive insurance (damages due to things other than vehicle collisions such as vandalism or hail), and substitute transportation (providing a rental car) are all options that can be added to most insurance policies.  Everyone’s insurance differs and it’s a good idea to talk to your specific agent to get the details of your coverage.

Trusting your case to an experienced attorney can alleviate a great deal of the stress that accompanies an auto accident.  A lawyer can protect your legal rights, defend you against the negligent actions of other drivers and help to maximize the amount of money you’re paid by the insurance companies involved.
